Navigate with the Command Palette

Learn how to use the Command Palette, launched with Cmd+K, to search tasks and perform quick actions from the keyboard.

This article explains how to use the Command Palette — a feature that lets you quickly search and execute tasks and commands from the keyboard.

Open the Command Palette

Press Cmd + K (Mac) or Ctrl + K (Windows).

The Command Palette appears in the center of the screen.

Search for Tasks

  1. Open the Command Palette.
  2. Type the keyword you want to search for.
  3. Tasks matching the title or tags are displayed.
  4. Use the arrow keys to select a task and press Enter to open it.

Execute Quick Actions

When the search field is empty, the following actions are displayed.

Use the arrow keys to select and press Enter to execute.

Keyboard Actions on Tasks

While a task is selected (highlighted with arrow keys), you can press the following keys to perform actions directly.

Using Action Panels

  1. Press a key while a task is selected (e.g., t for the tag panel).
  2. Use arrow keys to navigate within the panel.
  3. Press Enter to confirm.
  4. Press Escape to close the panel.

Task Context Menu

View a list of available actions for a specific task.

  1. Search for a task in the Command Palette.
  2. Select from the menu items displayed after the task name.

Quickly Access Favorite Filters

Saved favorite filters appear in the Command Palette.

  1. Open the Command Palette.
  2. Select a filter from the “Favorites” section.
  3. Press Enter to apply the filter.

Close the Command Palette

Close it using any of the following methods.

  • Press the Escape key
  • Click outside the Command Palette area

Input Mode vs. Navigation Mode

  • Input Mode: While typing in the search field
  • Navigation Mode: While moving through the list with arrow keys

Pressing a shortcut key during input mode will type that character. To switch to navigation mode, press an arrow key.

Efficient Workflow

  1. Press Cmd + K to open the Command Palette
  2. Type part of a task name to search
  3. Press to select a task
  4. Press f to mark as completed, or use other shortcuts

This entire workflow can be completed without using a mouse.
