1. Introduction
Frater LLC (“we,” “our,” or “us”) provides the desktop application “kakiko” (the “Service”). We respect your privacy and handle personal information and related data in accordance with applicable laws and this Privacy Policy (the “Policy”).
The Service is designed so that core data such as tasks entered by users is primarily stored on the user’s own device. However, we use cloud services to the extent necessary for operating the Service, such as account authentication and subscription status management.
2. Scope
This Policy applies to the Service (desktop application) and our related websites (the “Website”).
We collect the following information depending on usage and user settings.
- Email address
- Authentication identifiers (e.g., UID issued by Firebase)
- Tokens and other information necessary for authentication
The Service supports sign-in via Google accounts. In such cases, we receive information necessary for authentication (primarily email address) through the authentication provider (Google) and authentication platform (Firebase).
- Plan type, subscription status, billing status
- Identifiers assigned by payment processors (e.g., Stripe Customer ID)
- Name
- Billing address (which may include country/region, postal code, etc.)
This information is used for providing paid plans, processing billing, handling refunds, and responding to tax requirements.
Credit card numbers and other payment details are, in principle, handled directly by the payment processor (Stripe) and are not stored by us (exceptions may arise depending on payment routes or legal requirements).
3.3 User-Generated Data Stored on Device
- Task content, tags, due dates
- Time tracking records, routine settings
- Various application settings
This data is stored on the user’s device by default. If the user enables cloud sync or local backup features, data may be stored in the corresponding storage location.
- Cookies and similar technologies
- IP address, browser information, device information
- Access date and time, pages viewed, referrer, etc.
If the user subscribes to the Pro Plan and enables the cloud sync feature, we may store or process the following information in the cloud:
- Snapshots of task data encrypted on the user’s device
- Metadata necessary for synchronization (version numbers, update timestamps, device identifiers, etc.)
- Log information related to sync processing
This data is stored in an encrypted state as encrypted on the user’s device, and we do not hold the encryption keys.
4. Purposes of Use
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- Providing and maintaining the Service (including login, authentication, and subscription status verification)
- Managing paid plans, processing payments, billing, and handling refunds
- Preventing fraudulent use, ensuring security, and performing troubleshooting and maintenance
- Responding to inquiries and sending important notices
- Improving the quality of the Service and Website (including statistical and aggregate analysis)
- Compliance with laws, dispute resolution, and exercising and defending legal rights
Core data such as tasks is stored on the user’s device by default. If the user uninstalls the application or resets their device, such data may be lost.
Information is stored and processed on cloud services used by us or our service providers to the extent necessary for operating the Service, such as account authentication and subscription status management.
If the user enables the cloud sync feature, the information described in Section 3.5 is stored in the cloud.
6. Backup and Cloud Sync Features (Optional)
The Service may provide the following features only when explicitly enabled by the user.
6.1 Cloud Sync Feature
When the user enables the cloud sync feature, snapshots of task data encrypted on the user’s device are stored on cloud infrastructure used by us.
- The user can enable or disable the cloud sync feature at any time.
- Data is encrypted on the user’s device before being stored, and we do not hold the decryption keys.
- We cannot decrypt or view the contents of stored data.
- The sync feature may be temporarily unavailable due to changes in cloud service specifications, outages, or similar events.
6.2 Local Backup Feature
Users may back up data to a local directory of their choice.
- Management of backup files is the user’s own responsibility.
- We are not liable for any loss, corruption, or leakage of local backup files saved by the user.
7. Sharing and Service Providers
We do not provide personal information to third parties for the purpose of “selling” it.
However, we may provide information to third parties to the extent necessary in the following cases.
7.1 Sharing with Service Providers
We outsource certain operations necessary for operating the Service to external providers and may provide information to such providers to the extent necessary.
Key service providers include:
- Firebase / Google: Authentication platform and data storage for cloud sync functionality
- Stripe: Payment processing and subscription management
We ensure appropriate contractual arrangements and oversight with our service providers.
7.2 Disclosure Required by Law
We may disclose information when required by law, upon lawful request from courts or governmental authorities, or when necessary to protect rights or prevent fraud.
8. International Data Transfers
Depending on the operational circumstances of the cloud services and payment services we use, information may be processed or stored outside of Japan.
We take steps to ensure that personal information is appropriately protected in accordance with applicable laws, including through standard contractual clauses (SCCs) or other appropriate safeguards and international data transfer frameworks provided by service providers, as necessary.
9. Retention
We retain information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described above, or for the period required by applicable laws.
- Account-related information: for the duration the account remains active, or until account deletion is completed
- Billing and transaction information: for the period required by applicable accounting, tax, and other laws
Task data and other information stored on the user’s device is managed by the user, and we do not continuously store or delete such data.
10. Your Rights
Depending on applicable laws, users may have the right to request disclosure, correction, deletion, or cessation of use of personal information held by us.
In regions where the GDPR applies, users may exercise rights including the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and the right to object.
11. California Residents (CCPA / CPRA)
Where California law applies, users may have the right to request disclosure, correction, or deletion of personal information we collect.
We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising purposes.
12. Cookies (Website)
12.1 Desktop Application
The desktop application is not designed to rely on standard web cookies.
12.2 Website
Our Website uses cookies and similar technologies for the following purposes:
- Providing essential site functionality
- Access analytics for understanding and improving usage
We use Google Analytics solely for access analytics purposes and do not use it for advertising or in conjunction with advertising features.
Where required by local laws, we provide cookie consent management and opt-out options.
13. Security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational security measures to prevent leakage, loss, or damage of personal information. However, we cannot guarantee the absolute security of information.
14. Incident Response
In the event of a personal data incident, we will assess the scope of impact, implement measures to prevent recurrence, and notify relevant authorities and users as necessary in accordance with applicable laws.
15. Use by Minors
Where minors use the Service, parental consent may be required in accordance with applicable laws.
16. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy in response to changes in laws or the Service. We will notify users of material changes through the Service or on our Website.
